CHAPTER 16

ONE WAY TRIPS

Reeves hit the button with the flat of his palm and the door to the observation lounge on the Rebel Six base slid open. The sight of the blanet set against the backdrop of a swirling accretion disc took his breath away. Most of space was cold, dark and empty, like the black hole the blanet orbited, but occasionally it could surprise him with formations of stunning beauty. He’d been surrounded by death and destruction for so long that he’d forgotten what it felt like to experience a moment of pure joy.

“It is quite something, is it not?” said Ambassador One.

Reeves stepped into the room, and realized that the android was sitting on the front row of seats. A handful of other rebels were also in the room, which had been converted from the first-class lounge of a super transport. They were all deep in contemplation, and recognizing the need for stillness and self-reflection, Reeves didn’t want to disturb them by calling back to Ambassador One. Instead, he approached quietly and sat beside the android.

“I’ve been wondering where you’d got to since we arrived back,” Reeves said.

He’d tried to locate the android using his buzz, but given her mastery over all things technological, if Ambassador One didn’t want to be found, it was impossible to find her.

“I have been convalescing,” the android replied, with a sly smile, “and also processing alternative scenarios, now that the Vanguard has declined to join the rebel cause.”

“That must have been difficult for you,” Reeves observed, half-transfixed by the incredible scenes of nature beyond the observation lounge window.

Reeves had tried to phrase the statement in a casual, offhand way, as if he was not really all that bothered about the reply. However, the truth was that he regretted not enquiring about the android’s state of mind earlier. He’d been wrong to assume that simply because she was ancient and wise, and had a synthetic brain, rather than an organic one, she didn’t suffer the same as humans did. It was the reason why he had gone searching the base for the android in the first place. Reeves wanted to make sure she was okay, or at the very least that she felt supported.

“The war is difficult for all of us,” Ambassador One replied. It was a deliberately cagey and nondescript response, but Reeves wasn’t about to allow her off the hook so easily.

“Sure, but the Obsidians on the Vanguard are like your children, right?” Reeves said, glancing over at Ambassador One. She had adopted the flat, Mona Lisa smile that she’d worn while they were on the Vanguard. “And it’s not the first time these robots have been baying for your blood.” He winced, realizing that he could have phrased that last part with considerably more tact.

“It was disappointing that the Vanguard Obsidians also considered me a traitor, given that they were not involved in the uprising, and did not suffer banishment as a consequence,” Ambassador One replied. “However, I can understand why they were angry.
